Presenting material to a website designer for the construction of your website is much like giving your ideas to a builder before constructing your new home.

Here are some pointers to help the process:

(1) Look at other existing sites similar to what you want for your site. Notice their format, layout and presentation. Make a note of their domain addresses and let your designer know about them.

(2) Gather together the material you want to use for your website. Put your text for all the pages on Microsoft word.

(3) Gather together photos and any clipart that you would like to use.

(4) Make a story board of how you want the site to look and function. A story board is like the blueprints of your new custom home you are about to let the builder begin constructing for you. Always be specific with these details. The website designer will not know your thoughts unless you convey them clearly. Be specific with how many, where to, what for, the size, where at and from where. Any details left open for the designer to fill in can result in something you did not want. Not being specific makes the job more time consuming for the designer, which means a higher cost to the owner. A designer needs to know as many details as possible in order to quote the lowest price. Here is an example of a story board.

The best way to present this material is just on 8 1/2" X 11" sheets of paper. Remember to lay them on their side. This is because your computer screen is wider than it is high. Doing this helps you to get a better feel of what fits on the page (screen). The average viewing screen for the public is 14". In the past it was 12". But today, most computers are sold with 14 or 15 inch monitors and these are the ones to most accommodate. An 8 1/2" X 11" piece of paper will mimic that size for your layout.

Once this information is compiled, present it to your web designer for an estimate on the cost of construction.
